Fashion for a Cure

These are the cutest hats I've ever seen - and they're for a GREAT cause!!

Mara, a local Winnipeger, is making these hats along with her Mom, to raise money for a good friend who was recently diagnosed with Terminal Cancer. The funds raised are helping Flo and her husband pay for the treatment that Flo is getting in the U.S.

Flo's Story:

Our friends and family are attempting to raise funds to help with our healthcare bills associated with my wife’s battle with breast cancer.

In 2006 at the age of 33, Filomena started her long battle with cancer when she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.  Chemotherapy stopped working after a few sessions.  Radiation treatment was then used, which seemed to put the cancer into remission.  As a preventative treatment, the doctors recommended a stem cell transplant.  

Moving forward to February 2009 (after we miscarried) Filomena was diagnosed with breast cancer.  The stem cell transplant did not stop cancer from attacking her body again. It was devastating news!  While she was recovering from the mastectomy, we noticed a spot just above the scar that wouldn’t heal.  After a few weeks we decided to have it checked.  To our dismay, the doctor said it was cancer and that it was a sign it had spread.  With more tests and scans it was discovered that the cancer had spread to Filomena’s sternum, liver and right lung.  Our Chemo Oncologist stated that her condition is incurable.

Giving up is not an option and if our healthcare system said that Filomena’s cancer is not curable we’d have to find another place that will help us in our battle. 


We were referred to Envita Natural Medical Centers of America.  We are currently down in Scottsdale, Arizona undergoing treatment at Envita’s clinic.  Filomena’s treatments show great promise and we look forward to the day that we can say she is cured!  While this is fantastic news, Manitoba Health does not cover medical expenses incurred in the United States.  We are juggling our finances everyday to ensure that Filomena continues to receive treatment until she is healed.

I know you have all tried an ice cube tray with plastic wrap, then graduated to the ice cube tray with the plastic lid. Happy Mothers Day!

I have been looking for a great poem to sum up mommyhood and nothing has struck me.
Too mushy, too cheesy, too cynical or just plain sad.
Being a Mom is none of that to me, for me being a Mom is about change. Not good change or bad change just everyday something is a little different.

We think we have our routines, lives scheduled to the minute but think about it really think, go back to the moment you found out you were pregnant with your first, that instant everything changed and it never stopped.

My wedding dressed size changed.
Honeymoon not the same.
The love I have for my husband forever changed.
The way I lookED naked, gone~forever changed.
My idea of true pain, wrong to begin with.
Understanding and admiring my own mom, changes with everyday, (don't tell her).
Have I mentioned my boobs, oh how they changed. I had great boobs, dare I say perfect...now not so much. Perky-deflated, full-flat, high-tucked in to my yoga pants. Completely changed!
Not sure I had hope before she was born, but every day since I have had it~couldn't survive without it.
Hope for who they are now and what they will grow to be. Hope for "L" and me that we can give them all that is needed to be strong, empathetic, funny, spirited adults. Hope that they will see my mistakes and not make the same ones, but rather their own so they can learn that without mistakes there is no success.

With mommyhood change is enviable, anticipated even dreaded. But without change our babies would never take their first step, grasp your finger with their tiny hand, give you squishy hugs or learn to ride a bike. Without change there would be no first day of school, first date, first broken heart, you would never walk them down the aisle or hold your first grandchild.

Change is hard but rewarding. With each day my love for my babies deepens and I would never want that to change. So I accept that I can't control this journey and know that I wouldn't want to change a thing.

All my love to my heart, my shining star, my sunshine and my rainbows because of you I am forever changed, thank-you.

To all you mama's out there embrace change-put down the laundry, go outside and play today~ make a moment everyday. happy mothers day.

Elliven Studio Review and Giveaway

One night when blog hopping I came across a site called Lovely Clusters and here this very smart women had listed "crafty" blogs by region. I headed to the Canadian section and was surprised to find someone from Winnipeg. Of course I had to see what the fellow 'pegger was offering so I hopped on over to elliven studio.

Here I found exactly what I have always needed, not wanted by needed! For all of you who know me, you know that I constantly lose my bank card. I toss in in the back pocket of my jeans and forget that its there, so it ends up in the laundry only to be never seen again! This is a source of contention in my household, because I then take the hubby's to shop and forget to put it back. Next thing you know he can't pay for his gas..opps!

Anyways, at ellieven studio I found the prettiest of Mommy necessities~a mini card holder and coupon/receipt holder. I was so impressed with not only the idea of these products but with how pleasing they were to look at. The fabrics that Julie (creator) chooses are fresh, playful and oh so pretty. Ever the shopper I knew I had to get these.

I contacted Julie to see if I could possibly get a matching set before I placed my order through her Etsy shop. My email was answered promptly and in that email she not only offered to make me a matching accessory set but she offered to give it to me to do a review on. Much more than I was anticipating!

Only a few days later I got another email from this busy Mama of two boys, saying that my matching accessory set was complete, both were finished in my fabric of choice a colourful Amy Butler original called "Love". Since we both live in the same city, we figured that it should only take a few days for my package to arrive. Clearly my mailman did not have the same idea~I had to wait over the weekend to get my gift. On Monday it finally arrived, along with 13 other pieces of mail, oh joy!

I, of course, opened up my package first~completely neglecting the other ominous letters calling my name. My accessory set was wrap in matching pink tissue so everything co-ordinated very nicely. Also included were two beautiful hand made cards, that Julie creates as well. One for me to have and one addressed to me. The one addressed to me had a personal hand written note to me and two very professional business cards. I thought that adding a hand written note was such a nice touch, no one "writes" anymore, but I think the that when someone takes the time out of an obviously busy day to make that extra step it says a lot about them.

I couldn't be more happy about my set~ I pulled out my license and bank card from my overstuffed wallet and stuck them in my new card holder, perfect fit!! I then sorted my stack of receipts and coupons strewn about in my diaper bag, wallet and purse. I divided them up and neatly tucked them away opposite one another in the divided pockets of the receipt holder. I feel like such an organized lady now, well at least on the outside!

That night, I had to run to the grocery store and I LOVED the fact that I just grabbed my keys and mini card holder. No purse, no bulky diaper bag, just the ease of having my necessities zipped into my vest pocket. I was also able to fold $20 into the one of the divided pockets of the card holder.

Top 5~Can't Live Withouts!!

So awhile back I started a post about my all time favorite shower gift, but life got busy and I never finished it. Went back to look at the draft and it just seemed too long and not to the point. But when I was re-reading it I thought why not ask what your favorite shower gift was. Then Sarah thought we should take it one step further, why not do our Top 5 Can't Live Withouts.

So without any further a deux here are what I believe every Mommy should have~
1. JJ Cole Diaper and Wipe Pod (that's my fave shower gift, thanks Aunties D&S)
2. BioGaia (I am not a doctor so please consult with yours before trying)
3. Dr. Browns Bottles
4. Wet bag
5. Coca-Cola

So why these five, the Coke I think is self-explanatory~I don't drink coffee so I need something else to sustain awareness at 7AM after a sleepless night.
The JJ Cole Pod is so convenient, I can hook it on the stroller when walking to school or just toss it in my purse for those quick trips. It holds 2 diapers my wipes case, a couple band-aids and my house keys. The best part is I can just hand that to the hubby when we need to do a diaper change in a public place, he prefers this to the huge diaper bag.

I have written about the Dr. Browns bottles before, they saved us time and energy when feeding the twins. They are a little more pricey than the Gerber bottles we used with the older three but well worth the money. We all know what a wet bag is now, but when Abigail came along I had no idea. I used a grocery store plastic bag for dirty diapers or for the nasty sleeper I used to toss it in a mesh laundry bag from the $ Store. Both did not contain the smell or the wetness, so my diaper bag either stunk or was damp. Now a wet bag is a must have in this house hold, we use them for swim lessons, messy clothes, rain days at soccer and even for the wet mitts after a family day of tobogganing.

Last but certainly not least BioGaia~this product was life changing for us when Keaton came along. He was the gassiest of babies and the grumpiest! We tried everything~gripe water, Ovol Drops, baby exercises~nothing worked and the sleep deprivation was getting pretty intense. Our Doc suggested BioGaia, it is a probiotic that you don't need a prescription for but you do need to order it from the pharmacist because it is refrigerated. Within 4 days of giving him these tiny droplets of living organisms, my baby was a completely different child. At $30 for a 28 day supply they too are pricey, but if you have a colicky baby you know that it is money well spent. Please contact your doctor before trying, as I am just a Mama and not an MD.

Caution~ Poop, Nudity and Real Life Woos

So, I feel like I haven't had a chance to post in awhile, I have a couple in the hangar~ just not 100% done. But what do they say "life is what happens when you are not looking"?

For me it is not so much life but rather Keaton happened! He is my most adorable, bright, warm hearted two year old who runs the show. As I type he is carrying a tool box in one hand, a golf club in the other all the while wearing only a diaper. I am somewhat curious to see what happens next....

Earlier today he handed me his diaper and said "Keke poopy bum."
Yes, he was naked and yes there was poop in the diaper, I quickly lead him down the hall to his room to ensure a proper cleaning. I told him next time to keep his diaper on, he quickly responded with the typical "Why?", followed by the brightest smile ever.

From there he proceed to growl at the dog, bite him on the back, hit me with a plastic hammer, climb on the counter, sit there and eat BBQ potato chips still in the diaper only. He put the chip bag in the sink, turned on the hot water and yelled "Mama fun!" The bigger problem was not the hot water but rather he was hanging from the counter because he couldn't reach the chair he used to climb up originally.

Keaton is only one of five, so you can imagine the other capers my brood gets into daily. Two weekends ago my 8 year old daughter swung the bathroom door open only to see me standing there naked (trying to have the obligatory 5minute shower as the 2 year old slept) and she just stood there saying " Oh your naked....but someone is at the door. Can I let them in?"

Ahhhh, NO!

I guess the reason for this post is to let you all know "poop happens" to all of us~so don't have the required Mama guilt if you buy the cookies rather than bake them, if your kids don't wear matching socks or if you drop off your child at school when it just so happens there is no school that day. True story, did last week to Callum~I can feel you all feeling better about yourselves simultaneously.

Just remember we all do what we can, perfection is a myth.

Who's Complaining?

Our daughters moved up from "Mini Soccer" to "real" soccer this year.


Rather than being a warm, soft "timbit", they are hard ass "Waverley Warriors" and while I never really thought about the differences between that soft little Timbit and that Warrior, we learned them last night!

It was the first game for the U9 Girls and it was 5 degrees and pouring rain. Not drizzling, but full on cats hitting the umbrella, couldn't be more wet if you jumped in a swimming pool, pouring rain.

Us Moms (and Dads) were on the sidelines cheering on our girls, and complaining. And whining. And cold. And soaked. And I kept thinking "why are they playing in this!", "Why isn't this being cancelled?", "The girls are so wet", "The girls are so cold", "Oh those poor girls!".

Finally, 35 minutes into the game, 15 minutes before the end, they decided to call the game and let those "poor girls" get out of the rain. We called them off the field and I was greeted by my Warrior - with a HUGE smile on her face. She didn't feel the cold. She didn't care about the wet. She is a Waverley Warrior and she had FUN!
