What to do with Expired Carseats??

I have a Graco Snugride and base that expired in December of 2009. What do I do with it? I have no idea how to dispose of it.

I've heard that some shelters will take them, inspect them and then use them, but I don't know if this is safe, or if anything like this exists in Winnipeg.

Anybody know?

  2. I believe I heard once you can take them to an autopac agency or the fire dept and they will dispose of them correctly.

  3. They must be disposed of properly. I understand the need for a shelter to use it and someone may not be able to afford a car seat, but an expired one is just not safe at all.

The best way to dispose of them is to take the seat cover and padding off, cut it up and dispose of it in a seperate garbage bag than the rest. Cut the straps off and if there are any recycling centers in Winnipeg you may be able to recycle the shell. If not then take a sledge hammer to it and break it just once, dispose of the pieces in 2 seperate bags or bins.

  4. Thanks ladies! Allison, very informative but man a lot of work LOL!! I get the need though, so nobody will just see it and use it.

I'm going to call Autopac today to see if they do this for you (I know if your seat is in an accident and they replace it, they will do this) and if not, I'll do it myself. May be fun to take a little frustration out on the seat ;)

    I'll post my findings!
